Paper Bottle Beer, Anyone?

To encourage change in order to achieve a sustainable environment is great, but to be the change itself is truly divine. The present situation demands companies to develop an inclination towards saving Earth – which happens to be the only green planet in this universe.

Enter Paboco – the Paper Bottle Company, an innovative Danish startup that took it upon itself to create the world’s first fully biodegradable, paper bottle, made entirely from scratch using renewable materials. By fulfilling this ingenious feat, Paboco aims at providing environmental-friendly packaging solutions to industries and consumers for a sustainable future.

The Story Behind Paboco

In 2010, Danish innovation company, EcoXpac, started a paper bottle project. Five years later, Danish beer giant, Carlsberg, joined hands with them to create the world’s first “Green Fibre Bottle”. This collaboration resulted in the creation of a paper bottle prototype made out of recycled fibres. Meanwhile, BillerudKorsnäs, another organization that provides packaging solutions for companies, started exploring the possibilities of paper bottle products. Together with Alpla, a bottle manufacturer, the four companies launched Paboco in the year 2019, with Alpla and BillerudKorsnäs becoming the pioneer owners of Paboco.

The Paper Bottle Community

As the vision for a greener world takes on more shape, several companies are signing up to demonstrate their interest in eco-friendly, sustainable packaging. Myriam Shingleton, Vice President of Group Development at Carlsberg Group said: “The fact that other big companies are joining this community means that we will be able to move faster because we will be able to put our resources together, put our expertise together, have more momentum—to move even faster than what we have done in the last years”

Sustainable Beer-loving!

As beer lovers all over the world are increasingly leaning towards more sustainable beer, drinking our favourite alcobev from a recyclable paper bottle would be a welcome change. At the C40 Summit, Carlsberg ensured that attendees who flew in from megacities across the world were served with the classic Danish beer in the prototype paper bottles. However, beer consumers may have to wait for two years before they see alcohol stores stocking their shelves with beer in paper bottles. According to sources, thorough testing is still necessary before this cool innovation is ready to store what’s “probably the best beer in the world”.
